RE: Please help, I haven’t a clue! Tax query
Hi Gemma,
The tax free allowance for 2024/25 is £12,570. So this is then given over the course of the tax year Apr 24 - March 25, so this allows you to earn 1047.50 every month before tax is deducted. after you would be taxed at basic rate (20%).
If you have just 1 employer this allowance is set against that source, if you have 2 part time employments you can contact HMRC to request your allowance be split between the 2 sources of income: ie £600 tax free per month at one source and £447 tax free at the other source. Anything that goes over the tax free amounts split would then be taxed accordingly.
Pleae contact HMRC when both sources of income have started and we can see if this is possible - Income Tax: general enquiries.

RE: Tax on Cash Gift for House Deposit
Hi Charlie,
HMRC do not consider gifts to be taxable income for the receiver, but it can give rise to inheritance tax for the giver.

RE: Redundancy Tax Allowance - Same Employer 20 Years Apart
Hi Susan,
That does not sound correct, as your personal allowance is given on a yearly basis so something that happened 20 years ago would be irrelevant for this years tax free allowance. Did they not mean that you have used some of your personal allownce in this tax year already Apr 24 onwards maybe with your salary prior to being made redundant? You will probably need to speak with your payroll again to get a better pciture of what they mean.

RE: Part time second job tax
Hi Rash K,
The tax free allowance for this tax year Apr 24 - Mar 25 is 12570, which allows your to earn £1047.50 every month before you start paying tax. This is what is being applied to your placement employment (1257L code) , if you commence at 2nd P/T employment because, all you personal allowance is used at the main job, you would be taxed at the Basis Rate of tax which is 20% which will be shown as a BR code. At your 2nd job your should sign a P46 with them and tick statement c to indicate that it is not your main employment.

RE: Private pension - PAYE code
Hi Huw,
Hi it is hard to say wothout seeing an actual breakdown of what your code or both sources includes, it could be that your 2nd pension straddles the BR/HR bands so your main code may have been adjusted to account for this.
But really we would need to check your personal records, which cannot be done via this forum, you should contact the HMRC helpline:

RE: Tax code used for redundancy pay
Hi pjhitchman,
This code does not allow you any personal allowance, and would tax you using the 20% & 40% rates bands depending on the size of the payment. This code is standard for payments after leaving an employer as you will be provided with a P45 with just your employment income that has your tax code which can then be offered to a new source of income elsewhere, the second payment from the employer will then use 0T for any remaining income.
