One of our employees has reach retirement age part of the way into the last month of the tax year (March). We have changed the NI letter to C and have a new tax code for them. When we go to submit to HMRC it says ["The amount in [EMPLOYEESCONTRIBUTIONSONALLEARNINGS] must be 0.00 if the [NILETTER] is 'X', 'C', 'K', 'S' or 'W'. Please check", '7865', "This must be 0.00 if [NILETTER] is 'X', 'C', 'K', 'S' or 'W'.", 'Diagnostic message:', 'Assertion failure:'] The amount that the PAYE Basic software calculated is £40.30 for the employee to pay in NI. Surely the software should have calculated it correctly. Is there any way of changing the figure to be 0?

Hello Brett, I have the same problem, could you advise how you were able to resolve it please.

Brett - I have the same problem but it would be useful if you could share the solution with us. I was usable to call HMRC technical support as the Basic PAYE tool App not working following an earlier update - and the solution was only issued today! Many thanks

I can't quite remember, but it was something like delete the current HMRC calculation then go back to the previous month and change it. It then recalculates the current amount. I called HMRC technical support and got through in about 10 minutes. The lady on the phone was very helpful and got it sorted in about 5 minutes.

I have the same issue - it appears the software when you turn state pension age cannot apportion the true amount of NI which should be paid so does an annual review when making your final submission. However, this then generates the error code 7865 and the NI sum must be zero (andf clearly for anyone during a tax year reaching retirement age, this problem will always arise). So - two quetions: 1. Why doesn't the basic PAYE tools cope with this simple issue given the thousands reaching state returement age in any one tax year; and 2. I was given the run around after the fifth attempt of getting through to the employer helpline telling me it was not their issue - please call the IT Helpdesk team - did that twice and still not resolved (how is it all the operators do, is read from a book of instructions?) - so was informed to email the helpdesk and still waiting. I would love to show you how long I have spent on the telephone waiting and going nowhere! Whilst I will only ever turn state pension age once in my life, you would think this would NOT be a problem with HMRC's own software.?Could the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves be sent a copy of my email please? Thank you
