Hi, I am applying to pay for gaps in my NI record from 2006. I have completed all of the forms and confirmed with Future Pensions and I now just need to make the payment. I live abroad permanently and will be paying from a non- UK account. Please could you let me know how to pay? Please do not just send a link to the web page as I have read all the guidance and still cannot figure this out. The only guidance I can find relating to payment from an overseas back account is for people who are abroad temporarily.

Hi Catherine McHugh,
Please see  below our bank account details for you to use for your payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions from overseas:-
Use the following details to make a payment if your account is overseas:
•    Business Identifier Code (BIC) - BARCGB22
•    account number (IBAN) - GB49 BARC 2020 4830 9447 93
•    account name - HMRC NIC Receipts
Please use the following reference when forwarding payment:
your National Insurance number followed by ‘IC’, your surname then your initial.
If your bank limits you to a certain amount of characters, you should use your National Insurance number followed by ‘IC’ and as much of your surname as possible.
Example:
If your name is Anne Jones, you’d write the reference as QQ123456AICJONESA
Details can be found here:
Pay voluntary Class 3 National Insurance
Thank you.

Hello, I completed form CF83 and got a response. the response lists the voluntary payments that I need to pay to make a qualifying year and the deadline by which I need to make the payments. It also states that "Due do changes in the law, you need the Pension Service to confirm whether your State Pension will increase if you pay any shortfall." It is not clear what this means. Do I need to await this confirmation before making payment? Or do they mean that due to changes in the law, they were unable to provide this information in the letter? I have tried calling but have been on hold for over 1h Any help would be appreciated, Regards Martin

I also wish to pay Class 2 NICs using UK bank transfer. I have received a letter from HMRC detailing the payments required for which year and also which years I should pay. In a post above, it says a payment should be made separately for each year. However, all the space in the reference on the payment is taken by the 18 digit reference comprising National Insurance NumberICSurnameInitial. How can I identify for which years I am making payment?

Hi STROGET ANDREW,
Our bank details that you have provided are correct for you to use for your payment of voluntary class 2 National Insurance contributions from overseas.  Please also remember to use your Reference Number when making any payment by bank transfer – as you are overseas, your Reference Number will be:  Your National Insurance Number followed by ‘IC’, your surname then your initial.
Details may be found via Pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions if you do not pay through Self Assessment.
Thank you.

Hi Paul,
You may send one payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions if you wish to cover as many tax years that you wish to make.
When we receive your payment we will look at the shortfall letter that we sent you to work out what years that you made your payment for.
If we were unsure then we would write to ask you to clarify.
Just to confirm, our bank details can be found via:
Pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions if you do not pay through Self Assessment.
Thank you.

My application for National Insurance Voluntary "says" complete 02/03/2025 Would the "letter details years amounts etc" now be sent out by post?
Posted 2 months ago by Sharon2
I have already received a response stating that I am eligible to pay class 2, however I did not request to pay for future payments. I have therefore resubmitted the form, and it appears that I will not receive a response until after 5.04.2025. (Asking for old and future payments) Would I be able to pay some of the years quoted on the original form so that they at least reach you before 05.04.25 or should I wait ?

Hi, I am living in Ireland. I have been accepted to pay 6 years Class 3 contributions, 10 years Class 2. I’m 47 and intend continuing to pay voluntary contributions annually. Can I pay just the Class 2 contributions and make up the rest or do I have to pay the whole 16 years Class 3 and 2. Next question. The 18 digit code to use NI number IC followed by surname, can I just use this to pay? Or do I have to contact HMRC or DWP first for them to authorise? How do I make it clear what years I want to count? Can’t get through on phone, asked for call back, but have the breakdown and authority infront of me, Many thanks in advance

Hi Vdubber4638,
The time limits to pay Voluntary contributions ends on 5 April 2025 for tax years 2006-2007 to 2018-2019.
If payment is received after this date the amount will not be accepted and will be refunded.
You  find details on how to pay here:
Pay voluntary Class 3 National Insurance
Pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions if you do not pay through Self Assessment
Choose the option ‘Make an online or telephone bank transfer’ and payment information is shown under the heading ‘Overseas Payments.
The 18 digit reference number can be used to pay both Class 2 and Class 3 payments
If you wish to confirm which tax years you are paying you will need to call the National Insurance Enquiries helpline on 0300 20003500 or + 44 191 2037010.
All our lines are currently very busy.
Thank you.

Ré paying for NIC shortfall-years: The reply letter accepting my application to pay voluntary class 2 NIC contributions (in response to my CF83 form) includes the phrase "you need the Pension Service to confirm whether your State Pension will increase if you pay any shortfall". What form should this "confirmation" take? I called Future Pensions and the worker there told me verbally that each year of paid shortfall (£163.80(corresponds to an £6.83 per week in pension. Is that enough confirmation? I don't wish to pay for 18 years of shortfall if it has no effect on my pension.

Hi Peter Livingstone,
Our International Teams advise an individual to contact The Pension Service Future Pensions to make sure that it is worthwhile to pay the voluntary National Insurance contributions that they quoted in their letter.
If The Pension Service advise that it is worthwhile then that will be fine as sometimes it is not worthwhile to pay.
Thank you.
