Hi, My spouse claimed child benefits and received national insurance credits for years after 2010 towards his state pension. I would like to transfer some of these child benefit national insurance credits to myself as I don’t have those qualifying years on my national insurance record. I know I have to fill in the CF411A form to request this. My question is, once this form is submitted, will it transfer the credits for all the years stated automatically or only for the years my spouse already has a full qualifying year of national insurance towards his state pension? I only want to transfer child benefit national insurance credits where my spouse has a full qualifying year but his national insurance record does not clearly say which years he did not need child benefit national insurance credits. Thanks

Hi,
Credits can only be transferred between parents if the individual claiming child benefit has a complete qualifying tax year if credits earned through Child Benefit were to be deducted.
We cannot create a deficit for another person by taking credits from their account.
Therefore, any tax year granted through this application will not negatively impact your spouse.
If there are any tax years that cannot be transferred to you, our caseworkers will provide an explanation in writing.
Thank you.

Hi, Thank you for clarifying. What if my spouse has more than enough qualifying years without needing years that are only qualified through the child benefit credit? Could the child benefit credit be transferred if it means that year for my spouse will no longer be qualified but he will still receive a full state pension? Can child benefit credits be transferred if my spouse is over the state pension age and has started to receive state pension payments?

Hi MHH,
Even if removing credits from the account did not have an impact your spouse’s pension, we can not remove them from his account.
On the unlikely scenario that your spouse’s pension entitlement was ever miscalculated, or his NI record was incorrect and needed amendment, these Credits
would be available to take the place of any erroneous qualifying years on record or missed tax years from a pension calculation.
Yes, we can still transfer credits between parents if the parent claiming the child benefit is already claiming their pension.
Thank you.
