Hi Bradley Chambers,
If you submitted an application in early 2024 then you should have received confirmation, in writing, of whether or not the application has been successful and the next steps to take.
• You can check your
Personal tax account: sign in or set up (PTA), which will show the date you submitted the application to cease Self Assessment. The status message will display the stage your request is at.
• At the point that HMRC actions your request, the status message will show as completed and remains on your account for two years.
• We would write you a letter to confirm that the Self Assessment record is closed, or if we need more details from you. If you have not received a letter and it has been more than three weeks since you submitted the online form, then customers should check their PTA before contacting us by webchat
Self Assessment: general enquiries
• Customers can access their PTA using their HMRC online account or the HMRC app.
If your Self Employment ceased between the 06 April 2023 and the 5 April 2024 then you will still need to complete a tax return for that year and the Class 2 National Insurance due will form part of that calculation. That tax return has to be submitted along with any tax and National Insurance due by the 31 January 2025.
Class 2 National Insurance is payable through Self Assessment.
Class 1 National Insurance is payable through PAYE via your employer
Thank you.
