I have an official looking letter that refers to a tax credits review for 2012-13. Why would this be happening in 2024 please? It's made me fear this could be a scam. If it is legitimate, I can't understand the intended outcome - it states that a decision will be made on 10-11-24 and refers to an amount of nearly £4,000 - but I can't tell if this is an amount already paid or one that is due to me. I have tried phoning 0345 300 3900, but gave up after being half and hour on hold. Please advise. Many thanks.

Hi,
HMRC may write to a customer where a particular claim for a single or multiple tax years have not been correctly finalised on system.
In these cases we will write to the customer to ask if the details we hold are correct so that we can make the necessary legal decision.
We may also ask the customer to provide income details to ensure that we have paid the correct entitlement.
Without sight of the letter we are unable to confirm if this is the case.
You therefore do need to call Tax credits: general enquiries so tha your record can be accessed.
Thank you

I have had a similar letter, the amount was significantly less than you mentioned but it dates back to 2014! I recieved it a couple of weeks ago (2024). But it gave the same date (10.11.2024) for when a decision will ne made. And as this date has now passed I am assuming it must have been something nefarious. I too have tried many times to call the helpline but it is always busy and I cannot get through. It has made me very nervous and I feel very unsafe. Are people trying to scam me? Or trying to steal my data? It's very strange that we have the exact same date on our letters?

I have also received a TC5MM in relation to 2014. Will the tax office send me a cheque or request my bank details, as I have tried to call 0345 300 3900 and the tel message said that I would have at least an hours wait! Many thanks.

Hi Sarah,
HMRC may write to a customer where a particular claim for a single or multiple tax years have not been correctly finalised on system.
In these cases we will write to the customer to ask if the details we hold are correct so that we can make the necessary legal decision.
We may also ask the customer to provide income details to ensure that we have paid the correct entitlement.
If the details we hold are correct we will make a final decision on that year confirming that the customer has received the correct entitlement for the year.
If the details are incorrect the customer must tell us.
During the review, if we owe the customer any arrears of tax credits they would be paid into their bank account.
Thank you.

I received 2 letters from HMRC TC3MM. Tax credits review for April 2007. I have absolutely no idea what's it's about. I've tried calling with no joy. It says my award for the year 2007 to 2008 is £602.24. Is this a refund or deducted from my tax account. Please help.

I have now received a follow-up letter notifying a decision. Again, the communication 'looks' authentic. Also, there is no suspicious-seeming content and I'm not being asked to pay anything or provide any bank account details - I'm therefore happy that the original letter was not a scam. Not relevant here really, but the process must surely represent a waste of HMRC operating costs at the expense of taxpayers. It might be of public interest to be advised what/who triggered an investigation into a Tax Credits matter from so relatively long ago in the past - it certainly was not because of any application I made myself. However, I am not asking for a HMRC response on this question as this would involve further pointless effort and costs.

Hi jacqueline,
HMRC may write to a customer where a particular claim for a single or multiple tax years have not been correctly finalised on system. In these cases we will write to the customer to ask if the details we hold are correct so that we can make the necessary legal decision. If the details on the letter are correct the customer does not need to do anything. The letter acts as a final decision for the tax year shown. The customer only needs to contact us if the information shown in the letter is wrong.
Thank you.
