Paid National Insurance voluntary contributions and need to know if money has been received
On February 12th 2025 I paid NI voluntary contributions for the missing years that I was eligible to pay. I have tried to call, email and chat with the chatbot at HMRC to check if this money has been received. I have been disconnected after calling and waiting for over an hour ( living and calling from abroad), I have not received an email reply and the chatbot is of very little help and says there is not real person advisor available to chat with and can not say when one will be available. I also sent in the completed form IPC SU 117 to HM Revenue and Customs, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE98 1ZZ on February 13th 2025. I understand that HMRC is very busy but there must be someway that they can automatically inform me that they have received my payment, HMRC is in the business of collecting money. I am already of pensionable age ( 66 years old) and receiving a small pension from previous earned contributions. I have also contacted the Department for Work and Pensions to try and get an answer and have not heard from them either. I understand that it may take an extended period to assign the contributions to my NI record but I want to know that it is in the process of happening. Please let me know a reliable way to find out if my money has been received and when the paid voluntary contributions expect to be allocated to my NI record. This situation is very frustrating. Thank you for your help. -
RE: Mechanism for paying class 2 NI contributions from abroad
Hi HMRC,
I recently filled in the cf83 form online and have got an email confirmation from HMRC that it has been received.
However, the page with the link to start filling in the cf83 mentions printing out the completed online form and sending it in to HMRC.
Is mailing in a physical copy of the completed cf83 online form an essential part of the process of applying to pay voluntary contributions?
If it is what is the address to send it to?
There was no address or instructions to send it in on the " Form submitted page" that you get after you have finished and submitted the online cf83 form.
Thanks for your help with this. -
RE: Mechanism for paying class 2 NI contributions from abroad
Hello HMRC.
I am trying to find out the process I need to follow to pay my missing years NI voluntary contributions while living abroad so that I can receive an increased pension.
I am confused as to what i need to do.
I am already retired from my job abroad and i am 66, I have filled in the required pension form to claim my pension but deferred it until October of 2025.
I was born, lived and worked in the UK and then worked abroad after I left the UK in 1990 and I still live abroad.
I have viewed my HMRC account and contributions and it states that I can pay voluntary contributions for the years 2006/2007 to 2018/2019 by April 5th 2025 and then the years 2019/2020 to 2023/2024 by April 5th of 2026-2030 respectively.
I have only just found out I need to fill in form CF83 which will let me know if i should pay class 2 or 3, but it seems that reply could well be received after April 5th 2025, so it would be too late to pay the missing voluntary contributions.
So do I just fill in CF83 and pay what I believe to be the correct amount of contributions before the deadline?
Does it make any difference that I am retired from my job abroad?
Does it make any difference that I have completed the pension forms but deferred receiving my pension?
Thank you for any help that you can give.
