  • RE: Refund of Voluntary NI contribution after mistakenly paying Class 3 instead of 2

Hi, I have mistakenly paid class 3 contributions instead of class 2. This happened over a year ago, I have filled in form CF83 and have still not heard anything. I am also wondering if they will ask for proof to show I have been working overseas for many years in order to prove I should have paid the class 2 contributions. Does anyone know if they need to get proof and what documentation I will need to submit? I have been working in the USA for 28 years. I am also concerned that now I have bought back many years of NI contributions it will affect my social security payment in the States and that I should never have started the process. It is hard getting the information you need sometimes. My international accountant suggested I buy back NI contributions and I just assumed (rather naively) that that would entitle me to both USA and UK government pensions but I have now been hearing that it may be prorated due to an agreement between the 2 countries. Another friend stated that after having worked in the USA and contributed to social security there for more than 30 years you are then entitled to your full pension from another country, however she lives in Canada. If anyone has any suggestions or information regarding my concerns please could you share. I paid thousands of pounds the HMRC to try and buy back NI contributions and now I am thinking I have made a big mistake and am just throwing my money away and because I have 30 years in the USA system I would have been better off just sticking with the one pension.
