I am filling in my 2023-24 self assessment form which is due in April. I worked part of the year in the UK and left half way through the year to work abroad (where I am still working). I have only just found out about the possibility of split year treatment which I believe could apply to me. However I note that there was a deadline in October 24 for submission of form S109 for split treatment for 2023-24. Does this mean I cannot now submit a S109 form as the deadline has passed?

Not HMRC...the October 24 deadline was for paper returns with paper residence pages (SA109). SA returns online (commercial software) deadline was 31/1...you have an extended date, but you cant use HMRC software for residence pages, noone can, their software doesnt support it (to claim split year)...suggest you file via commercial software including the residence pages to claim split year (list of commercial software on HMRC site, some support residence pages but not all so check)

Hi Sian,
As you have an extended deadline for the return, you can still claim it on there.
However, you will need to either submit the whole return by paper or buy 3rd party software to file online -
Self Assessment commercial software suppliers
Thank you.

Thank you for your helpful replies. So just to confirm one aspect, if I don’t buy the software I could still file the return including the SA109 form by 10 April as long as the whole return is done on paper? Is that correct? And where would I send the whole paper return to? Many thanks
