Hello, I have a temporary NI number. Will it be possible to apply for an proper NI number? I am not a UK citizen, nor a UK resident. I have a property in the UK and have been paying income tax using the temporary NI for more than a decade now. However, as it is only a temporary NI there are a lot of online services I cannot use as my temporary NI number is not recognised... there is a letter missing at the end.

Hi,
You can only apply for a UK National Insurance number (NINO) if you need one.
The temporary NINO you have is probably an administrative one set up when your Self Assessment record was created. It has no link to any National Insurance record.
If you feel that you need a UK NINO, the guidance on how to apply is here:
Apply for a National Insurance number
Thank you.

Hi Admin I was told by HMRC that they need my NiNO to get my NI contribution for the years I worked in the UK, although I never had one then but a temporary. But I can't get one as per the site your refer to Apply for NI tells: "You can apply for a National Insurance number if you: - live in the UK - have the right to work in the UK - are working, looking for work or have an offer to start work" To who should I go to get that solved ? Thx in advance Luc B
