I worked in the UK from 2004-2008. I then started working abroad. During that time I had an NI number which I have only just realized is not a regular NI number and was only a temporary number. During that time I completed tax self assessments. My income was above the lower earnings limit for NI contributions but below the tax free threshold. How can I apply to get a national insurance number from abroad to link this NI number and then be able to use the government gateway?

Hi Mick R,
You can only apply for a NI number if you currently live in the UK and have intent to work, claim benefits or apply for a student loan.
You will not be able to apply for a NI number if you live outside the UK.
Thank you.
