I am buying a used second hand flight simulator from a museum in Slovenia and will be collecting it myself to bring it into the UK. I’m aware there is no duty to pay on the item, but is there any import VAT and am I required to declare it?

If you are bringing in goods you have acquired abroad then you need to declare goods if they are over your personal allowance. Apart from alcohol, tobacco etc there is a value limit of £390 for other goods. There is no personal allowance if the goods are a commercial import. Therefore if the item you intend to import is over £390 duties ( if applicable) and import VAT will be due. https://www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain You can make a customs declaration and pay on line - details are in the above guidelines.

I am a portrait artist, and i had some UK client that buying my works from my website https://usa2z.co, and seems the VAT is quite complicate, when they placing the order, shopify charged the tax, while when the painting arrive in the UK, my client was charged again by the customs. Is there any a better way for them to simplify all these?

Hi Mitchie edwards Anything imported into the uk must be declared to customs. This also applies to second hand goods and goods imported for personal use. Goods may be subject import duty and import VAT. VAT is usually 20% but some goods may have a reduced rate. Import duty depends on the type of goods. You can check this in the UK tariff schedule. https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff If goods come via freight the personal allowance dies not apply. In addition you may need to use the services of a customs broker/ agent to make the formal declaration to customs. They will charge for this service.

Hi mitchie edwards,
Anything shipped to you from another country goes through customs to check it is not banned or restricted and you pay the right tax and ‘duty’ on it. You can see guidance here:
Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad
Thank you.

Could I ask - if you do some shopping on holiday abroad and then bring it back in your hand luggage (or even, say, wearing it), do you have to pay import VAT on it (as opposed to having it shipped over)?

Hello, If I buy second hand goods from USA via eBay ( I’m thinking of a pair of jeans, value not to exceed £40) would I have to pay import tax on them when they arrive? Thank you.

Hi Junfeng,
Can you confirm if the value of the goods are above or below £135?
Thank you.

Hi,
You will not have to pay anything to the delivery company to receive goods worth less than £135 unless they’re gifts over £39 or excise goods (for example, alcohol and tobacco):
